Titanfall 3 Is Truly Gone: What We Know About the Cancelled Game

For years, Titanfall fans have been clinging to the hope that Respawn Entertainment would return to its beloved sci-fi shooter franchise. Rumors have surfaced again and again, teasing the possibility of Titanfall 3, only for them to fizzle out with no confirmation.

But this week, it feels like the final nail has been driven into the mech-shaped coffin.

Earlier this week, Electronic Arts confirmed layoffs that impacted several divisions of the company. Around 400 employees were let go, and a chunk of those — about 100 — were from Respawn Entertainment.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, among the internal casualties was a project set in the Titanfall universe, described as an “extraction shooter” in very early development. This news came as a shock, especially to fans who had been stirred by a fresh wave of Titanfall 3 rumors earlier in April.

The internet has since been buzzing with conflicting reports. Schreier claims the cancelled Titanfall game was in its infancy, barely underway before being scrapped. Meanwhile, Jeff Grubb has said there wasn’t a Titanfall game in development at all. These statements contradict each other — and both clash with what known leakers like Osvaldatore and YOROTSUKI_ have been saying.

Osvaldatore, who helped ignite the most recent Titanfall 3 rumors alongside fellow leaker YOROTSUKI_, made a final statement on the matter earlier today. He claims to have double-checked his sources and insists that Titanfall 3 was real, and it was actually close to completion before being abruptly cancelled.

That’s quite a leap from Schreier’s take, which paints the project as little more than an idea on the drawing board. Still, Osvaldatore seems confident, even though he knows that neither EA nor Respawn will publicly back up his claims.

“I can say looking at you straight in the eyes that what I said about TF was correct,” Osvaldatore wrote in a tweet. He also mentioned that he’s established a trustworthy group of sources that he cross-references with. That confidence has sparked even more debate in the Titanfall community, with fans wondering who to believe — the industry’s top journalists, or the insiders who’ve accurately leaked news in the past?

At this point, it might not really matter. Whether Titanfall 3 was almost finished or barely started, the fact remains that it's not happening. Respawn’s attention is currently locked onto Apex Legends and upcoming Star Wars titles. While Titanfall helped put the studio on the map, it hasn’t been their focus for a long time. Titanfall 2, which came out in 2016, was critically acclaimed but didn’t perform well commercially — largely due to an unfortunate release window sandwiched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Despite that rocky launch, Titanfall 2 built a strong cult following over the years, thanks to its fast-paced movement, incredible level design, and a surprisingly heartfelt campaign. Fans have been asking for a sequel ever since.

But with the rise of battle royale, extraction shooters, and live service models, the traditional Titanfall formula might not be a strong business case anymore. The gaming landscape has shifted dramatically and Respawn seems to be evolving with it.

Still, the passion for Titanfall hasn't died. Even years later, there’s an active community modding the game, hosting events, and discussing it on forums and social media. For these loyal fans, the idea of a third entry was always more than just a rumor — it was a dream worth holding onto. And while it hurts to accept that dream might officially be over, the love for the franchise isn’t going anywhere.

Maybe someday, Respawn or another team under EA will find a way to bring Titanfall back. But for now, we have to say goodbye — again. This time, it feels like it might actually stick.
